The mobo will be designed with particular care to run  linux :D
Which name (one?) really do you want to add to the poll?  ;)

Well, as you may know, we do not have enough options for names.
Here are a few more better and more goodly names.
Power Bisquit
Gnew Sandwich Laptop
Cheese and Fries in Disguise
What have these nerds come up with now?
Oh, yeah? But does it run linux?

added on the poll
I have a suggestion for a name. My suggestion is PowerPhoenix.

We have time at least until 10th May  :)

Our PowerPC devkit NXP T2080RDB run Yocto project Linux-based systems for embedded product, at these stage we need to upgrade Yocto thanks to the NXP SDK 2.0 and upgrade kernel with the framebuffer that support a video card.

news from the team / The Power Progress Community is here
« on: August 27, 2016, 11:52:58 PM »
We are proud to announce that our association has been constituted. As you might know, it is an Italian organization so the original statutes are written in Italian and we are working to have an English translation. The contents of that document were discussed at the beginning of July, the conversations were very productive and after some modifications we had the statutes ready for the creation of the association. Moreover,  in that meeting we approved its name and now we are setting up a new Internet domain according to that. After agreeing all this, the association was finally registered at the end of July.

This fact is very important for us because it allows us to contact other organizations and companies as a real entity and gives us the possibility of signing agreements of any type. Even more, the association is the legal figure we need to start the funding campaign

And now… we need a logo

We are organizing a contest during August to select the Power Progress Community logo. Everybody is invited to send us an image but we are deciding how to receive them and the voting application to use. Stay tuned to this website if you are interested on participating.

More activities of interest

Continuing with this update, we were doing a survey to check how the community wants to support the project. Over 150 people filled our survey and most of them show interest in funding the project somehow. In addition, there is a group of people which will contribute only if the final specs of the notebook match their expectations. Lastly, a very small group showed only curiosity with no intention of collaborating with money.

Some weeks ago we wrote a post explaining our first Hardware Group meeting. The good news here is that this group is being very active these days and we arranged a new meeting last week focusing on what components could be more open and accomplish our requirements. In relation to this, we are maintaining conversations with two companies that could provide us the enclosures. This is a key point because determines how the motherboard is designed.

That’s almost all, we are moving forward and the crowdfunding campaign is near.

Our "software workgroup" like to collaborate with Debian powerpc team!
Please give us some details our we can collaborate.  ;)

The NXP e6500 core, the core of our Notebook, can run in big endian mode with Altivec acceleration and in little endian mode without Altivec acceleration.

Notebook chassis / Re: What about 3D printed chassis
« on: April 06, 2016, 10:02:13 AM »
I think the "parametric design project" is a very interesting project and we are already in contact with Luke Leighton that like our project.
In the near future I believe that we will collaborate together.
Now we are in the stage of making an agreement with a notebook producer to provide us its notebook chassis,battery,lcd,etc...
Even Tesla Motor for the its first electric car have used a Lotus "Chassis" :D

Even if we are not a Company, we are a R&D volunteer association :"we define ourselves as a Solidarity/Ethical/Passion driven community. We promote a Positive and Humane relationship between collaborators, and advocate giving people a choice to run GNU/Linux on different hardware platforms."

Is there any new date when i can buy a laptop?
We need to collect the money to start design and prototypes before September 2016, the design start on September 2016 , so at beginning of 2017 we will have the Open Hardware design and the prototypes... ( if people found the Open Hardware project ) :D

We are waiting their answer to collaborate. :)

news from the team / Re: New specifications and development status

Hi Carlos,
I'm, as individual member, already in OPF.
I can see that Nvidia and ATI are disclosing their-self to Open Source.
Join OPF as PowerPC-Notebook project" could be a good suggestion to discuss with the core team of our project, thanks for the suggestion.
Genesi as new PowerPC plans? really? where have you read this? please share the links about.

many thanks!

Do you are already active with our projects?
In case please evaluate to activate yourself.

The e6500 core (T2080 / T4080) is a good choice.
But after the deal with NXP, I am not confident, if NXP will stick with future development of the PowerPC. I'm hoping it.

On the other hand, a POWER8 (or a striped down version of it) would be also a good choice, maybe a better one (for future notebooks). A 12-core POWER8 has a TDP of 190W at 3.1GHz. A 4-core 2.5GHz POWER8 should fit in a notebook, maybe?

Okay, a POWER8 is too expensive and the temperature is maybe also too high.

But for example, a striped down version of the POWER6 (POWER6UL) was in IBMs drawer.

This was only a thought, don't hit me, please.
DDR3 and USB3 is also a good choice. Maybe Thunderbolt is also possible?
Because of such possibilities: :-)

The notebook should be as small as possible. My personal preference.
The case should designed in a way that the MXM, SSD or RAM is easy to change / upgrade.

About the MXM graphic card. My personal preference is ATi.

About nVidia and Linux PowerPC driver:
nVidia has joined the OpenPOWER Foundation:

Maybe in the future we will get good Linux drivers from nVidia?
Maybe it does make sense to join the OPF as well? As "PowerPC-Notebook project"?

This all are only thoughts. Input are welcome :-)

Edit: Ah, also has Genesi plans for a PowerPC device. Maybe it does make sense to do a collaboration with Genesi? It's because we are only a few PowerPC enthusiastic, we should all stay together.

I will also contact a few PowerPC fans, maybe they would like to join the team.

Dear friends,
This is a CALL for everyone that like to manage to take care about the Communication and Relationship of our project to the rest of the World.

If you like to improve this project regarding Communication and Relationship you can contact us.

Many Thanks!   :D
