Merry Christmas to everyone!
I think that the first point to discuss before a good communication is to find a cool name to the computer.
We should brainstorm so I start :
One of the ideas is to have a simple name that is easy to prononce in many countries. (clear latin vowels and no tricky consonants). It could symbolise something powerful, that last long that is fun and gives freedom. I don't know much italian but an italian word would be very cool actually!
Domino
Mambo
Armonia
Zen
Zenzero (I like the word "ginger" in english)
Sogno (could be spelt SONIO or SONYO)
Mela ;)
We could also have the word power in it to give a continuity to the powerbook :
PowerLibre
PowerFree
FreePower
LatinPower ;)
Or to follow with "Book" :
NewBook
FreeBook
Book (It would be "The Book"!)
Give us your suggestions! ;)
Power-Zen?
I like Power-Zen!
Power-Box
Related to creativity :
Create
Cre8
Power-Cre8
Power2Create
Power2Cre8
Creare
Inspir8
Virtuo
Maestro
I like some of these a lot;
Maestro - sounds like something from the 80's, along the lines on Atari, or Commodore. "Introducing the new Maestro 644!"
Power-Zen - I also like a lot.
Some people in my family love Maestro very much. In many languages it means the master in art. A master who helps you get smarter.
I love it more and more too. I can imagine some catch-phrases that would go well with the free (as freedom) aspect of the whole project.
"Maestro : Be your own master"
"Maestro : Being free is an art"
I love it! :)
I definitely think the name should involve the word Power.
-PowerNote
-PowerTop
(Non-"Power" labeled)
-Krato (From the greek "Kratos", that means "Power")
-P-Book
-Libro ("Book" in Spanish)
-Crio ("I create" in Portuguese)
-Tchau ("Bye", in Portuguese - Sounds as Italian "Ciao")
I personally liked PowerLibre a lot.
PowerLibre is cool. It means exactly what this computer will be
What about just "Power" ?
PowerFree
PowerGo
PowerPi
PowerSeed
OpenPower
PowerOne
NewPower
PowerTeam
PowerLink
PowerAll
PowerSource
Maestro could be mistaken for Maestro Credit Card circuit, and any info about will be overcame by that meme.
Good point Rafaelle!
Here are some more ideas :
PowerPad (I think this one is used by a nintendo wii device)
PowerView
PowerGnu
Libretto (as "notebook" in italian it also includes the word libre that works in so many languages)
Hello all ^_^ good Sunday nice and cute name! but sorry for bad notice libretto taken from Toshiba. :( my suggest is: not necessary the name recall the power or useful. But necessary not too long unique with good sound, when you think new name tray to speech and listen. For found name we can reassume the good point of PowerPC Notebook; he accept many and not usually operating system [ Morphos, AmigaOs, Linux, MacOs, Aros ] He is totally Open to Open Source, Free Concept not closed technology or firmware. Is good point for Geek and Nerd and for all who suffer the tecno control. Open Technology for open mind :))
OpenBook ..... OBook ..... L33T ....
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet
We can use leet ^_^
T4B00k .... [ "to for book" or tabook ] :D
It sounds good Marco!
I propose we chose a few names (let's say 5!). At least one with "power" in it, one with a freedom related word and other cool names.
Then we do 5 logos and we ask other members of the forum to vote.
What do you think?
Is good working ^_^ I think; first we can try to make form at notebook with put inside "here" many ideas. In first time is only imagine inside brain. I wish with GNU/Notebook PowerPC can working R.Stalman. For go to inside Stalman hand we are need real free software, hardware, working and easy design, short and strong name. Every nerd can speak: Hey, can you see new PowerPC Notebook? Is fabulous, is upgradeable, can you use Amiga OS and R.Stalman use it. [ at moment R.Stalman use MIPS Notebook ]. Stay tuned in this day i want to put one possible design [ my idea chassis notebook ], i think to inspired from RUSSIA concept [ strong, with big and definite easy line style ] example: old IBM notebook. I hope this contribute can help for found ideas name or other. :))
P.S. Sorry for my English, i learn with MMORPG and Newspaper Magazine : /
I know Italian Name have fascination.
Domino is nice,
C0ffee [ is example MAC address for SUN machine ] the logo is cup of coffee ^_^
Isotopo [ in Greek Language "Same Site" ] the logo little sphere run around and leaves a trail round like Saturn rings.
PORCO [ Power Ordinateur Risc Computer Outofbox ..... extended GNU tradition with animal and recursive { porco=pig but derogatory } ] the logo is PORCO. AHAHAHAH. :D
Fooo [ foofighter referred ] the logo is UFO Alien Bell.
FoooBar [ nonsense for programmers ] the logo is little Round Matrix Code.
Your english is indeed a bit difficult for me to understand but I think I get the overall meaning! ;) Practicing it here is good for you anyway!
Could you find some italian names that refer to freedom?
I also wish this computer will be as close as possible to the FSF "Respects your freedom" certification. I am so much against personal data tracking and planed obsolescence business models. I hope we can work on that direction.
libretto was the name of an old toshiba netbook. I'd just wait for an actual board before worrying about the name though :)

Well, if we want to organise a campaign to promote the project and spread the word I think it is good to have a name. A name is very important. It is how you call something when you talk about it. It is like naming a variable in your program. Bad naming = problems in the long term. Also you cannot change the name of something without it being disturbing in people's mind so the name has to be found before people starts to talk about the project. It is my opinion.
Good Morning ....Absolutely, i approve all you explain inside upper post. ^_^ thank you for patience for my English! Now ... Freedom synonyms in Italian Language.
Freedom = Liberta', synonyms [sinonimi]: Indipendenza, Scelta [ scegliere ], Possibilita', Arbitrio, Facolta', Aperto, Selvatico, Sciolto, Virtu', Sovranita'.
these are free from the contents of phrase.
I was thinking to something like "Piace"... or "Mi Piace" ("I like it!" in Italian language) that has PC in it, or better PPC acronym...
Piace
P-PiaCe
Mi-PiaCe
My-Piace
My-Pi-Ac
My-PC
My-PPC
My-PP-iaCe
My-PC-ACE
MyP
Or a joke with CCCP like old socialist Russia Acronym CCCP/SSSR.
CCCPPC
CCCPPPC
Other ideas
PPCXME
PPCxME
PPC4ME
MEonPPC
ME-on-PPC
Something regarding cats:
MEOW Computer
MIAO Computer
PussyCat
Other names:
Compy
Lollipop
LollipoPC
LolliPoPC
PopCorn
PoPCorn
PoPCornPC
PoPCorn-PC
PoPCorn is a name I love.
It is easy. It contains PPC acronym in it, and Popcorn food is an evergreen.
It is preferred by younger and elder people. When it fries it is sparkling popping, and if cooked without oil is a very light food.
Name Popcorn also it sounds the same in many languages and indicates the same food almost worldwide.
To avoid being misinterpred with existing Popcorn food, it should always be addressed with PC in the end. So you must refer to it as "Popcorn-PC" or "PopcornPC" on any situation you write its name.
Also Popcorn name could be easily graphically represented with a pretty logo of a popcorn cup to be embedded on the computer chassis, the same as Apple Logo.
Thanks Raffaele! I like "Popcorn" very much too! A logo for this name can be quite cool!
I am working on some logos at the moment so I will do a couple of logos for the best name in this brainstorming and then we can choose the one we like.
I'll keep you updated during the coming week.
Raffaele Lovely names ^_^ i like PoPCorn and MeOW [ but for suggest cat logo ^_^ ] .
PoPCorn was a really clever one.
If everyone likes PoPCorn, we may just go for this one! I also think it is a clever one! I will try to find a cool typo and a logo for it. I think I have an idea. :)
What do everyone think?
I made a minimal logo example.
Some who are more skilled in art could do better.
I have also made a logo. I tried to make PPC be well visible in the word. (It is kind of sketchy and I can improve it)
I just want to check who is not happy with this name? If anyone is not, let us know, we may have missed something.
It could mean POwerPC Open-source Risc Notebook. haha :P
I like it.
PPC should be not only black, but the "o" of popcorn should be a bit more little.
Also PPC shoild be more compact in kerning to made it immediately recognizable.
Thanks for the feedback, I will try that.
FEEEF ^_^ POwerPC Open-source Risc Notebook is very nice !!! I curios to watch logo.
VigorPC with subtitle with the CPU name. something like PPC601, so:
"VigorPC
PPC601"
Hi guys
I like cool short names with an acronym inside.
But ... am I the only one who reads "porn" at the first view? :-\
We have to take care of this because it might result that people remember porn and not .. POPCorn.
Pop(pen) in german is an other word for (having sex) ... so this might drive it even more.
@chdrsto, personally, I don't read "porn" but if others do, that would be a problem to solve with the logo. "Popcorn" not being a bad word or a word you can confuse with "porn".
I have setup a poll where you can vote for other names => http://forum.powerpc-notebook.org/index.php?topic=40.0 (http://forum.powerpc-notebook.org/index.php?topic=40.0)
PoPCorn, I like a lot.
Also is coming in my mind:
- PPClib64 (PowerPC, Liberty, 64bit), short and sounds good
- PPCnux64 (PowerPC, Linux, 64bit), sounds also good, but sounds more like a distro
- Lipon64 (Linux, Power, open source, notebook, 64bit)
"PoPCorn" sound nice.
I would personally want to avoid naming it with Linux or a derivation of it in it though, that kind of sends the message that only Linux is cared about (i.e. it is designed ONLY for Linux, which kind of defeats the purpose of respecting the freedom of users).
I have thought about that, too.
osRnB
open source RISC noteBook :-)
A further proposal:
Librebook PowerPC
Advantage:
There is room left for further "RISC" books ...

PowerPC
PowerPC is a registered trademark though (at least in the US) so you might need some kind of license or permission from IBM before you can use it in your product name (rather than just a description of it).
Yes, of course you need. I would be surprised, if we wouldn't get a permission from NXP/ IBM.
Otherwise we could call it Model P :-)
"PoPCorn Openbook" or "PoPCorn Librebook" are sure good names to choice for!
PoPCorn LibreBook. That sounds good!
PowerBook ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
