Others OS / Minix 3
« on: October 27, 2015, 10:01:14 PM »
This is only proposition as possible alternative to Linux.

Drawback is license bettter to say history of license and not so crowded community but it can use lots of NetBSD packages so it's not so "unmaintained". But Minix provides possible future alternative to Linux. Also currently drawback (among others) in Minix is lack of something like cgroups feature in Linux kernel.

6:9 is selected  only because of today standard and lower costs compared to 4:3.  This project currently needs to follow whats  most common on market to reduce costs and bring first product as soon as possible.

4:3 is same as non "island" style keyboard, I agree 4:3 is cool but I doubt it will ever come back, same as "island" style keyboard will be replaced again with old style key edge by edge..

We can all suggest what we want to see in computer from this project, we can propose butterfly-keyboard but it will only postpone  first product release. We should concentrate on what is useful and achievable. from currently standard components on market with being aware of  cost of that same things.

DVI-I adapters to e.g. hdmi or display port are rare and hard to get. VESA group is more open to open source community. If you put mini DisplayPortyou can easly get miniDP to DVI-I adapter.

Why not glossy -  I don't like to see my self in the mirror :D

I agree 16:10 is  better then 16:9 but its rare . On 16:9/10 you can put two windows split horizontally (total 160 chars)  on 4:3 that is not so good.

Suggestions / Switch to non upgreadable RAM, SDD and GPU

Is maybe a better solution to provide solution with just enough RAM, HDD and GPU. From my experience laptop I bought I never upgraded because price for upgrade was to much part of instead buying a new laptop. Maybe to go with more RAM, SDD and GPU. Price of slots is much more then price of soldering component to MB.

e.g. to go with minimum non upgradable 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, and dedicated nVidia GeForce 940M 2GB.

My vote for first version is only:

802.11a/b/g/n 2.4 GHz

5 GHz is not taking over market as it should so for next version you have space or something for upgrade.

what you think about MagSage power adapter connector? I think that this will can be very useful in usage when you have to connect your power adapter and be safe that someone will not pull the whole laptop by accidentally pulling cord by hand, foot or something else :D.

From my point of view numeric keyboard is only useful only for some kind of people who needs to enter lots of numbers every day e.g.  accountants. I think they are not in first target group :D

From my point of view focus is first on IT professionals and students and they can live without numeric keypad.

Instead choosing 15'', because in that case numeric keyboard is option, maybe is better way to go with 13''  display size and drop any possibility  for numeric keyboard.

what about 13,3'' display - first you need to gain attention from professionals and students and both require portability and ease of usage in limited space e.g. table in caffe bar, server room, school desk, lerning room, etc.? In this case 1920x1080 is more than enough - again who is in first target group?

4:3 is great as we old schools got used to it, but it's past and will never come back in reasonable price another plus for 16:9(10) is more natural to human eyes  :o Also new kids are not familiar with 4:3, because from birth they are surrounded with 16:9.

If there will be only one port then mini DisplayPort is must to have! If there is physical and financial space then HDMI + mini DisplayPort is nice to have - but I will drop this solution. From my point of view mini DisplayPort is enought you can alwaya attach miniDP to HDMI adapter but wih miniDP you have option for multiple displays daisy chaining.

One more propositions is to go absolutely  with non glossy display.
